GB Announcement - CLARIFICATION OVER SPECIAL RESOLUTIONS AT THE EGM
We look forward to seeing you this weekend at the Conference, Annual General Meeting and Extraordinary General Meeting, where members will be asked to support the Board of Trustees' decision to accept the recommendations made by Conduco Consulting Ltd on the future governance and strategy of SLSGB.
It is really very important that as many members as possible attend, have their say and vote. By voting to accept the recommendations of the report you will be supporting the development of a new structure. Further consultation with members, clubs, Regions and Commissions will take place before a new structure is brought back to a later EGM where members will be able to vote again. Only then will you be making any fundamental change to the organisation.
Over recent months many members have written to me, phoned me and met with me to discuss their concerns over the organisation's track record of performance, communication and direction which have created, for many, a lack of trust. I fundamentally believe this stems from the structure of the Board, which is why we secured the funding and commissioned the Strategic Review to take a close painful look at our governance.
Our current Board and I are unanimously in agreement with the Strategic Review findings that our current structure prevents unity and clarity of leadership from occurring as the Board are conflicted by their roles. I feel I must let you know that our structure is not effective because it allows and actively encourages Trustees to focus on their specific remit; this means that Trustees are not working to the best interests of all our beneficiaries, something we are legally and ethically required to do.
We have a responsibility to our members and to the public to create a non-conflicted Board of Trustees who focus on strategic direction, business opportunities, financial and risk management, not on operational activity. The vital operational activities of sport, lifesaving and regional activity must have greater opportunity for member consultation and representation, and joined up teams of volunteers and staff, so that the organisation is at all times best serving the needs of our members.
In the Board's response to the report by Conduco, we have tried to answer some of the questions that have arisen. Please take time to read the report in full and the response by the Board. These documents, previously circulated can be downloaded here;
However, the specific section that relates to the principle behind any new structure can be downloaded again here;Principles of the new structure I ask that you attend to vote, or use your proxy vote (download by clicking on this link: Proxy Voting Form) by Friday 23rd at 12pm, to stand up for the organisation you believe in, change our future, and to create a new organisation that is strong and unified
January 9th - SLS GB having been undergoing a Governance review led by a independant business consultant. We have been asked to take part in this and have expressed our willingness to do so. Although we are now seperate to GB and Self Governing. We hope that this meeting will take place in early 2010.
